Distance Education Courses


Distance education courses are a great option for people who don鈥檛 have time to attend face to face classes, work irregular hours, or have other time commitments. Alvin College has different ways that you can take distance education courses in a secure online environment via multiple delivery methods:

  • Online synchronous (INTS)
  • Online asynchronous (INT)
  • Hybrid (HYB)
  • Hyflex (HYX)


Distance Education Course Delivery Methods

Online Synchronous (INTS)

Courses are delivered entirely online, where students and instructors meet virtually at scheduled times using video conferencing or other live platforms. Real-time interaction and participation are required.

Online Asychronous (INT)

Fully online courses that do not require real-time meetings. Students complete coursework on their own schedule within set deadlines, engaging with materials, discussions and assignments through a learning management system.

Hybrid (HYB)

Hybrid courses combine online learning and face-to-face instruction in a manner that reduces the number of classroom meetings. Students attend a portion of the class in the traditional classroom at regularly scheduled times and complete the remaining portion of the class online.

HyFlex (FYX)

Combines face-to-face, synchronous online, and asynchronous online learning into a single class. Students can choose how they participate 鈥 whether in person, live online, or at their own pace 鈥 on a session-by-session basis, offering maximum flexibility. All 麻豆直播 distance education classes are delivered through the Learning Management System, My Blackboard. All courses, including face-to-face, must have a Blackboard presence. The system can be used for communication, documentation,and/or assignments and assessments. All faculty are required to complete the鈥淏lackboard Basics鈥 training that is accessible through the My Blackboard system. Faculty log in to My Blackboard through the POD.


Is Online Learning a Good Match?

Before you enroll in an online course, you might want to take some time to think about yourself as a learner and see whether your characteristics would help you be a successful online learner. Your answers to these questions can help you decide whether or not to take an online course. You can also talk to an advisor before you decide. Please  to learn more.

Registering for Online Learning Courses

You register just like any other class. It is best to register during the early and regular registration periods to ensure that the classes do not fill up. Additional fees for distance education courses may be charged at the rate listed under Tuition and Fees.

Online Readiness Course

The focus of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) for 麻豆直播 is to increase student success in the area of online learning. In order to increase student success in the online learning environment all students taking an online class will be required to take an Online Readiness course administered by Advising.

Technical Requirements

Students who enroll in distance education courses do not have to own a computer, but they must have access to a computer with internet. Some courses may have specific hardware or software requirements. Be sure to consult your course syllabus for additional requirements.

Note: Students with older, slower computers may have difficulty accessing course materials. Slower internet speeds can cause file downloads/uploads to take extended periods of time making it difficult to interact with course materials.

Blackboard

Your online classes can be accessed via Blackboard by clicking 鈥淭HE POD鈥 at the top of the 麻豆直播 homepage. Once you have logged into THE POD, you should see your courses, depending on your device, either on the right-hand side or bottom of your screen under 鈥淢y Classes.鈥
